Matteo Callegari
Mother
June 7 to July 31
opening days from June 6 to June 9
The forest, the water running in the great river, the life force pulsating in every being.
The vital energy that moves from the roots to the leaves up to the branches grazing the sky. The one providing all nourishment and healing . The origin where everything is continuously born and the end where everything dissolves into. She is Mother.
These paintings are for her. Specs of color, accumulated on the surface, coalescing into flora and fauna as it emerges from the darkness. The inner light of the mind’s eye illuminates singular beings revealing their material richness . Met by their pointed gaze we are reminded that we, just like them, belong with her. The paint dissolves feathers, fur, scales, foliage and petals into patterns, energy.
Becoming absorbed into her we remember: we are of Her.
Matteo Callegari
flatmarkus is honored to present Mother, the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.
Matteo Callegari’s practice has been deeply informed by his stays in the Amazon rainforest in Peru. As a result of his personal experiences, the artist has aligned himself with an understanding of nature which originates simultaneously from surviving native cultures and the historical ancestral past of “advanced” societies, where humans are regarded as one of the many intimately connected parts of a whole. This perspective considers nature as an infinitely complex network of interdependent relationships, composed by an incredible variety of organisms that display intelligent behavior. Callegari holds an MFA from Hunter College, New York. He has exhibited at Giovanni’s Room, Los Angeles, Thomas Brambilla Gallery, Bergamo, Carl Kostyál, London, Ramiken Crucible, New York, and other venues.
The artist has recently established the non-profit Light for the Amazon, to develop educational projects to promote the preservation of knowledge of healing traditions based on medicinal plants of the rainforest.
